Mitchell Trousers Class (Closet Core)

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
The Mitchell Trousers pattern is an ode to singer-songwriter extraordinaire, Joni Mitchell. Closet Core has created a modern interpretation of Joni’s timeless style in these pleated-front trousers that feature lovely angled front pockets and optional back welt pockets. The high-waisted cut provides a feminine touch to the fit, as do the optional waist ties. Choose from two pattern views: Tapered Leg or Wide Leg.
This project is for the intermediate sewer who has some previous garment-making experience and is comfortable selecting a pattern size and/or drafting a pattern between sizes. Techniques we will cover in this class include:
- Making a hidden waistband facing
- Installing a front fly zipper
- Making pleated pockets for the front
- Sewing darts to shape the back of the trousers
- Inserting welt pockets on the back (optional)
- Adding an optional waist tie secured with hardware (D-rings or a slider)
- Best practices for grading seams, finishing raw edges (e.g., bias tape, French seams on pockets), and topstitching for a professional finish on your garment.
CLASS STRUCTURE:
This Mitchell Trousers class will include 2 sessions held 2 weeks apart to allow you ample time to work on your project.
- Prior to the first session, Pre-Class work is needed (i.e., get familiar with the pattern, determine your pattern size, select and prepare your fabrics, cut out your pattern pieces, apply interfacing) so you will be ready to start sewing in Session 1.
- Homework is planned for the 2 weeks between the sessions to keep your "sew-jo" happening as you make progress on your garment.
- Session 2 will pick up where we left off from Session 1, as well as additional finishing tips to help you create a beautiful, professional-looking garment.
