Toaster Sweater #2 (Sew House Seven)
Do you have a fear of sewing knit garments? Fear no more! The Toaster Sweater is a great pattern to get acquainted with sewing stretch fabrics. In this class, you will be sewing on your regular domestic sewing machine using either the standard zigzag stitch or other special stretch stitch settings that may be available with your machine.
For this class, we will be working on Version #2 of the Toaster Sweater, which features a semi-high neck with a faced mini-funnel neck. It is fitted through the shoulders and sleeves, and fuller through the body. It has a low-high hem with side vents (the back is 1” longer than the front). Leslie will walk you through each step of the pattern as you sew your Toaster Sweater from start to finish!
Skills that will be covered in this class include how to sew stretchy fabrics, sewing a neck self-facing, setting sleeves, creating a side vent with mitered corners at the bottom hem. An option of using a twin/double needle for the hems will also be demonstrated.
Fabrics that work well for Version #2 of this pattern include thick cotton interlock knits and ponte knits. In other words, you need a fabric that is heavier and more stable than, say, a t-shirt knit. This will give structure to the mini-funnel neckline so it will stand up. The knit fabric must have at least 20% stretch (e.g., a length of 4.5” must be able to stretch to at least 5.5”).
This pattern is available in two sizing options:
