Intro to Applique

This class is perfect for anyone who wants to try appliqué. You’ll learn three appliqué methods using your sewing machine: turned edge (which can also be done by hand), raw edge, and appliqué using interfacing. You’re welcome to focus on just one method or try more than one during class. We’ll also cover several ways to prepare your appliqué shapes, and all patterns will be provided.

Methods:

Please review the appliqué methods ahead of time and plan your supplies based on the method(s) you’d like to try in class. You do not need to purchase supplies for all appliqué methods. Please review the supply list linked above to see which supplies are needed for each appliqué method.

1. Raw edge applique: cutting shapes out directly, applying a fusible web, applying them to your project and sewing them on by machine (will be shown how to cut shapes and apply to fabric using fusible web)

2. Turned edge applique: cutting shapes out with a seam allowance that gets turned over to form your shapes, applying them to your project and sewing them on by machine or by hand (will be shown how to cut shapes and prepare using freezer paper and the applying them to your project with either pins or a glue stick and sewing them on by hand or machine).

3. Interfacing: sewing interfacing on and turning your applique piece inside out and then applying it to your project with either pins or a glue stick and sewing them on by hand or machine (how to apply a light interfacing and cut it to apply to your project with pins or a glue stick).  This method is only used for very simple shapes like circles and cannot be used for intricate shapes.
